APOLOGY MADE TO WHIP

MR NASH AND MR GERARD

(From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, April 20. A dispute among the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash), the Minister of Railways (Mr J. K. McAlpine), and Mr Speaker as to had the right to speak when time for discussing questions was running out in the House of Representatives this afternoon involved the Senior Government Whip (Mr R. G. Gerard). Mr Nash accused Mr Gerard of “egging on’’ Mr McAlpine to take up time. Mr Gerard protested that Mr Nash was unfair, and as soon as the House rose he crossed the floor to talk heatedly to the Leader of the Opposition. Late in the evening Mr Nash rose to apologise to Mr Gerard. He said he had found that his interpretation of Mr Gerard’s actions and the implications of his remark were entirely incorrect. Mr Gerard was endeavouring to do something entirely different from what he had thought
