PAPANUI HIGH SCHOOL WING
PREPARATIONS FOR NEW BUILDING
The new wing of the Papanui High School will be started very soon. The site has been levelled, and workers' hutments and materials have in preparation for laying the foundations. The building will be erected oh the south-east side of the main driveway from Langdon’s road, in line with the swimming bath. Would enrolments be accepted on the assumption that the new wing would be ready for occupation when the new school year opened? asked Mr R. H. McDonald at a meeting of the Board of Governors yesterday afternoon. “Provided there are sufficient marquees available for February and March,” replied the principal (Mr L. B. Newton). / Mr Newton made no direct answer when Mr McDonald asked whether that was the latest indication of when the new building would be finished, but said: “Some months ago I mentioned facetiously that we might have to use the swimming pool dressing sheds for classes. I regret to say that we are doing just that this year.” The school is also using a church hall for classes, and the Education Department yesterday authorised a grant to the church authorities in lieu of rent.
