ADDINGTON MARKET

BIG FAT SHEEP YARDING

Lamb Prices Show Little Change BEST CATTLE STEADY More than 6000 head were, yarded in the fat sheep section at Addington stock market yesterday. Th€ yarding was the largest for a long time and there were more fat ewes on offer than at any other time this season. Ewes were cheaper by up to about 4s at the close of the sale. All but best wethers were also easier. Fat lambs were harder to sell, but prices were about late rates. Best quality' fat cattle maintained late rates, but other classes were not in so much demand. FAT LAMBS In the fat lamb sale values were from par to a shade easier than last week. The yarding totalled 2533, compared with 1490 at the last sale. It comprised a good number of light and medium quality lambs, but there was also a sprinkling of good quality sheep. While prices were not greatly different from those ruling last week, sales were generally harder to make. Freezing buyers were again in the market on only a very limited scale. Twelve lambs out of a consignment of 63 from L. Morris (Norwood) sold at 83s Id, the top price of the day. The whole line, which made from 74s Id upwards, averaged about 76s Id. A good sale of shorn lambs was made on account of W. J. Burnett (Spotswood). Twenty-nine sold at 61s Id to 67 S Id, with 11 at the top figure. The best of the offering made from 73s Id to' 83s Id, good 66s Id to 71s Id, medium 53s Id to 65s 7d, and others down to 42s Id. For ewes the market opened out about 2s below last week’s rates, and as the sale progressed there was a further easing of about 2s to 2s 6d to bring rates back to those of about a fortnight ago. For wethers the sale was inclined to be erratic. Best wethers sold about as well as last week, but medium quality were 2s to 3s cheaper and old wethers, unless they were of very good quality, were hard to sell.

Wethers made to 93s Id for one sent forward by Scott Bros. (Dunsandel). T. E. M. Brooks (Brookside) offered six old ewes, which brought 39s Id. Values were:— Extra prime wethers, to 93s Id. Prime, 84s to 91s.

FAT CATTLE The fat cattle entry totalled 426 head, compared with 365 last week, and was of fairly good quality. The sale for best steers opened on a slightly firmer tone, but as the market progressed there was an easing to about late rates. There was littl - change in the rates for heifers, but tor other than the best quality cows the market was again lifeless, with low rates the rule. Cows of low quality only fit for manufacturing were scarcely saleable, as freezing works have insufficient space at present to handle them. All medium and second-class cattle were hard to. sell, as they are below the quality wanted by butchers and are at present not wanted by graziers, who have no feed to bring them on. Steers made to £5l 2s 6d for one from H. W. Harrison (Omihi); heifers from D. O. Masefield (Goughs Bay) sold at up to £4l 2s 6d; and a cow from J. R. Thome (Hororata) realised £37 2s 6d. There was a fair number of heifers of only fair quality and for these the demand was not at all - animated and prices were easier than at the last sale. The cows were of mixed quality with a few useful sorts, and for the better class close to profit or calved values were fully up to 1 Ate rates to slightly better, but for anything of backward quality or of sey ; or Jersey cross breeding there was little inquiry, and sales were hard to make. Best second, third, and fourth calvers sold at £24 to £3O, with odd sales at £33 and £35, medium £lB to £23, and others down to £9. Only a small gallery followed the sale. VEALERS Veal prices did not vary much from last week. FAT PIGS The porker entry was again a large one and included one and a half trucks from outside districts. The market was a very dull one and competition was dragging throughout the sale. In the bacon section there was a medium entry and competition was quite good with values fully on a par with last week. Values were: Light porkers, £4 6s fid to £5 4s fi.d Medium porkers, £5 9s 6d to £6 2s 6d. Heavy porkers, £6 4S to £6 17s fid Choppers, £5 3s 6d to £lO 16s. Light baconers, £7 9s 6d to £8 Is 6d.
