Congolaise, a four-year-old half-sister by Edenbridge to Mandeville and Riverstone, attracted attention at Wingatui this morning when she had her first school over country. Congolaise (S. Harrington) was accomE led J? y another Southland-owned iper, Thule (B. R. Thomson), and both Bes gave a promising display in a round over nine steeplechase fences. Congolaise put in some magnificent Ioap«, particularly at the water jump, where she made two lengths on her companion, but her lack of experience was evident at the brush double, and it was left to her more experienced companion to lead her over these obstacles. _ Raced by her breeder, Mr A. R. McNaught, Congolaise was given four races from E. A. Winsloe’s Goie stable early this season, but she was not prominent in the running. Mandeville built up a good record over country, and if he had not hit the sod wall inside the last mile he may have taken Grand National honours in 1953, when Duke Royal beat him by a length and a half. On the third day of the meeting the Siegfried gelding had an easy win in the Lincoln Steeplechase. Riverstone also mastered the Riccarton country with convincing wins in the Hunt Cup and Lincoln Steeples this season, and trainer H. A. Anderton nas promising material to work on with this Edenbridge mare. Showed Pace on Flat A four-year-old Maniototo gelding from Artist’s Glory, Thule, which is owned by Mr V. N. Price, is another recent addition to H. A. Anderton’s team. He Save his best performance to date, and >r a jumper showed pace on the flat. Emperor (B. R. Thomson) was taken out for a school over the same fences, but after jumping the sod wall and double biush he was pulled up because of a broken leather. The Royal Arch gelding got safely over the first jump, and his jumping Improved as he warmed up. In his first attempt over country, Emperor finished second to mystify in the Gardiner Memorial at Birchwood last month, and he can be expected to improve on this effort before long. Balveine is the latest recruit to hurdling after a preliminary preparation by his trainer, G. A. Fielding. He was given his first run over the pony hurdle, with B. B. Thomson in the saddle, and he accomplished his task well. WfiiteSatin (S. Harrington) shaded Kind Wish (B. R. Thomson) in a good, fast school over six hurdles. to her companion, and they completed the round on terms. Sir Gerald, a five-year-old brother to Whitecombe Jack, has rejoined R.'Heasley s stable. The Royal Chief gelding showed ability last season by running a close second in the Trial Stakes at the Wingatui June meeting, but he went amiss and had to be put aside.
