ANZAC DAY

ARRANGEMENTS MADE FOR SERVICES The fortieth anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli is unlikely to be marked in Christchurch, as it will be elsewhere, by Gallipoli veterans being given pride of place in the Anzac Day parade. Final arrangements for the parade will be made this week by the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association, but the president (Mr G. D. Hattawav) said last evening that it was probable that the procession and the units taking part in it would follow the pattern of recent years. In Wellington, there will be a special reunion of Gallipoli veterans. The speaker at the citizens’ service this year will be Mr W. R. Lascelles. The chairman will be the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.). The dawn service will be held as

usual at the war memorial in Cathedral square, and later in the morning there will be other services at the schools and in the suburbs. Primary schools will observe the occasion at assemblies on Friday. The Anzac Day parade will start at 2 p.m., and those intending to take part are to assemble in Cranmer square at 1.20 p.m. The parade will march along Kilmore street, Victoria street, Colombo street and Cashel street to King Edward Barracks, pausing to place a wreath at the Bridge of Remembrance. After the citizens’ service in the barracks, the wreaths will be taken to the war memorial, where they will be received by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev A. K. Warren). At the end of a brief service there, the band of the Ist Canterbury Regiment will play special settings of “Last Post” and Evening Hymn.” Immediately after this service, poppies will be placed in the Field of Remembrance at the Godley statue site, and in the evening there will be a Toe H service in the Cathedral. The secretary of the Christchurch R.S.A. (Mr L. A. McKenzie) said yesterday that those wishing to send wreaths for the parade should have them at the Jellicoe Hall, Gloucester street, by 12.20 p.m. on Anzac Day. Roman Catholic Service
