SWIMMING
CANTERBURY CENTRE MEETS
The Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association decided last evening to abandon inter-club relay races. Addressing the quarterly meeting of the centre, the secretary (Miss D. Brown) said that the registration of team members was chaotic and clubs often found it necessary to make changes in teams. It was also decided to abolish the setting of standard times for Canterbury championships. In recommending this move, the management Committee ad-
vised that the scheme had not raised the standard of swimming to any great extent, but it had been subject to a lot of abuse.
A letter from the Wharenui Club suggesting that officials for inter-club carnivals be appointed by a central appointments board, was read by the secretary. THie suggestion was adopted. Under the new system a roster will be operated and all officials for carnivals will be nominated by the appointments board, although the responsibility for notifying the officials nominated will rest with the dubs.
Criticism of the amount of space given by the newspapers to swimming events was made by several delegates. They were discussing a suggestion made in a letter from the Wharenui Club that a publicity officer be appointed by the centre.
Many delegates complained that although generous coverage, including action photographs, was given to most other sports, swimming events were given very little publicity. It was decided that a reporter with some interest in swimming activities be approached and offered the position.
