SEWER RELIEF PROGRAMME
PLAN FOR NORTHERN AREAS TENDERS TO BE CALLED SHORTLY The Christchurch Drainage Board’s plan for the relief of northern areas of the city had advanced to the stage where, in the next three or four weeks, tenders would be called for a length of three miles 30 chains of sewer, the chairman (Mr H. P. Smith) reported last evening. The sewer would be from the corner of Woodham road and Worcester street to the corner of Albany street and St. Albans street. “This is a large contract, probably about £200,000, and it is hoped that it will attract contractors with adequate plant and resources,” said Mr Smith.
As the contract proceeded it would be possible to divert the Marshland road pumping station rising main from a siphon on Glenarm terrace to discharge into the new main at the corner of Randall street and North parade. That would open the way for reticulation of the area from Glenarm terrace up to Horseshoe Lake to a pumping station on Queensbury street. Completion of the trunk sewer to Geraldine street would provide capacity for the flow from the present station at Harrison street and the new station at Mahers road to serve the area Ranger street, Philpotts road across to Hills road and northward.
While the trunk v was being completed, tenders would be called for the smaller 36-inch and 30-inch pipes to carry on from St. Albans street to Mays road and Leinster and Strowan roads, Mr Smith said. The Leinster road section would allow for full expansion to the west up to Russley road, and would relieve the present congestion at the bottom of Fendalton road.
“The completion of these lines provides the necessary trunk capacity fpr expansion of reticulation to the north and west of the city,” Mr Smith said. “Reticulation will be undertaken in such time as to be completed as nearly as possible when the trunk sewers are completed.”
