FLOATING DOCK AT WELLINGTON

MAJOR REPAIRS NEEDED (New Zealand Press Association) w WELLINGTON, April 18. The Wellington Harbour Board’s floating dock needs a major refit, after 23 years of service, during which it has lifted nearly 900 ships. Its underwater structure has corroded badly. In his last annual report to the board, its chief engineer (Mr D. S. G. Marchbanks) said that inspection of the dock’s pontoon tanks had shown that the original paintwork was breaking down in places, and plates were badly corroded.

The floating dock, which is of the self-docking type, is made up of a number of sections. The normal process of repairing it would be to cut apart the sections one by one and dock them on the remaining structure. Local engineering firms could do the repairs, but might take a long time. An alternative would be to tow the dock to Sydney, a costly and dangerous business. The board may also install new electric cathodic anti-cor-rosion equipment, and see what effect hull haS ° n 016 decay of the big steel
