DEATH OF NOTED AERO ENGINEER

Major Frank Halford, a leading engine designer and a director of the De Havilland Aircraft Company, died suddenly at his home at Northwood, Middlesex, aged 61. He was chairman of De Havilland Engine Company since 1944, and was responsible for the design of a number of aircraft engines, including the de Havilland Gipsy, used by such famous pilots as Amy Johnson, Jim Mollison, Kingsford Smith and Jean Batten. He also developed the Goblin engine, used in Vampire jet fighters, and the Ghost engine, used in Comet jet airliners.
