DIVORCED WOMAN KILLS HERSELF
POISONING CHARGE RECALLED (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 18. A divorced woman, who was the central figure in a charge of poisoning an international Rugby League player with thallium in 1953, was found shot dead with a pistol in a North Sydney hotel last night. She was Veronica Mabel Monty, about 47, who had been working at the hotel as a maid. A .32 pistol and two empty cartridge cases were found lying near Mrs Monty’s body. Police believe Mrs Monty tested the gun by firing a shot into the mattress of her bed, and then she turned the gun on herself. Mrs Monty was involved in one of the most sensational poisoning cases in recent years. This was the poisoning of the international Rugby League winger, Bobby Lulham, who was married to Mrs Monty’s daughter. Mrs Monty was acquitted of a charge of having attempted to murder Lulham with thallium.
