SIXTEEN HOUSES QUALIFY

FOUR HEATS DECIDED AT ADDINGTON

The possible number of 16 maidens qualified at the Addington trials yesterday to race at totalisator meetings. Royal Serenade, a six-year-old halfbrother by Gold Chief to Defendant, trained at Addington by W. E. Thomson for Mrs R. M. Symonds, led all the way to win the first qualifying test by three lengths in 3min 2asec. He paced his last half-mile in Imin 6sec, and although he was kept up to his work, he was always travelling ’easily. Lord Nelson, which finished second in this heat, is a three-year-old colt by Kingcobra from Final Fancy, trained at Hornby by A. T. Fairbairn for Mrs T. Fairbairn. He was always handy in the running. Third, three lengths away, was Tourie, a three-year-old gelding by Gay Piper from the Springfield Globe mare. Bonnet Blue. He is trained at Methven by his owner, G. McKendry, and is an attractive type. Ferry Globe finished a fair fourth after breaking at the start. He is a five-year-old gelding by Super Globe from Eva Volo.

The second qualifying test was won from end to end by Dandy Daisy, a five-year-old mare by Gamble from Rosie Grattan, trained at Addington by G. E. Thompson for Miss V. Clemence. Medalius, which finished second, is a three-year-old gelding by Springbok from the Gold Bar mare, Gold "Way, and is trained at Harewood by A. R. McKenzie for Mr R. L. Sutherland. Medalius was a little slow away, but he was second throughout the final round. Third, under a good hold, was Loyal Piper, a three-year-old filly by Gay Piper from Jet Propelled, trained at Methven by F. McKendry for Mrs T. A. McKendry. Loyal Piper was slow to get into her stride, and she impressed by the manner in which she made up her ground. The fourth horse in this heat was Punaki, a four-year-old Sandydale gelding from Our Nulgie, trained by D. A. Morland for Mr J. N. Mouat. Punaki was well back in seventh place with six furlongs to run, and he showed a good turn of speed. Showed Speed Cobina 'showed a useful turn of speed to win the third qualifying test after a slow beginning. With six furlongs to travel she was in sixth position, but she moved up to follow Young Kaye and Brawl into the straight. Shaken up a little, she finished on solidly to win by half a length. Cobina is a four-year-old mare by Kingcobra from Inah Globe, and is trained at Weedons by L. F. Berkett for Messrs A. J. and J. B. Macdonald.

Young Kaye was handily placed all the way, and after leading into the straight she battled on for second. She is a four-year-old mare by Young Bob from Needlepoint, and is trained at New Brighton by her owner, F. C. Bodger. l McGimpy finished third, a lengtlj back, after losing a long stretch of ground at the start, and he was very impressive. He is a four-year-old gelding by Indictment from Regal Voyage, dam of Haughty and several other good winners. McGimpy is trained by W. E. Taylor for Mr R. C. Sinclair.

Rene Lou, which was well back in eighth position with a round to go, finished fourth, two lengths from McGimpy. She is a four-year-old Gold Chief mare from Noreen Logan, and is trained by G. H. Murfitt for Mr E. Lloyd. The fourth qualifying test was won in clear-cut fashion by Jungle Lord, a four-year-old gelding by Congo Song from Gold Dice, trained at Addington by K. Purdon for Mr J. Owen. Jungle Lord overcame a slow beginning to take the lead with three furlongs to travel, and from that stage he gave nothing else a chance, winning by 15 lengths. Young Soong, which finished second, enjoyed the run of the race. A four-year-old half-sister. by Young Bob to Herald, Worthy Dick, and Battleground, she is trained at Templeton by D. G. Jones for Mr C. B. Foon. Three lengths away, Night Owl, a three-year-old gelding by Canova from Brown Owl, trained at New Brighton by G. Cameron for Messrs Meo brothers, finished third.

Fourth in this heat, another four lengths back, was Grand Gesture, a six-year-old gelding by King Scott from Valparaiso, trained by G. Alexander for Messrs K. A. and J. E. V. Chapman. Grand Gesture enjoyed a good run, but he was hard pressed to hold off Placid Girl for his placing. j
