RETIREMENT FROM PUBLIC LIFE
DECISION BY FORMER CABINET MINISTER (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 18. Acting on doctors’ instructions, Mr W. H. Fortune, former Minister in change of Police, has given up public life m the meantime. He will not be a candidate in the Auckland Electric Power Board election next month. He was elected only a month ago to fill a vacancy on the board. He will serve on the board until the election. Mr Fortune has also had to give up organisation work for the Karitane appeal for the Auckland province. An Auckland businessman, Mr Fortune was first elected to Parliament In 1946 and was appointed Minister Assistant to the Prime Minister and Minister of Police when the National Party became the Government three years later. He was defeated in the General Election last year.
