POWER SAVING
Sir,—l switch off my water-heater with the best of them; but la this as effective as it sounds? After 10 a.m., a little very hot water is drawn off and diluted with cold water; as the day goes on and the water cools, more is drawn off and used undiluted. Whether the replacement water is heated by day or by night seems to me irrelevant. During the war even Buckingham Palace has a “plimsoU line” marked on bath-tubs. Could we not forgo the luxury of big hot baths for this winter? Another power-waster is to use the hot taps when only cold water is needed, or of running off hot water to start the electric kettle for the odd cup of tea. It does seem to me that a realistic overhaul of our hot-tap habits might accomplish more than a ceremonial day-time switch-off. —Yours, etc., XY.Z. April 18, 1955.
