Hydraulic Mining In Russia

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, April 18. Two “hydraulic” coal-pits are working in the Kuznetsk basin in southwest Russia, according to Tass, the Soviet news agency, quoting a report in the Soviet Communist Party newspaper “Pravda.” The coal is mined by directing powerful jets of water at the face. The water washes the coal away down iron chutes to a crusher, where it is pulped and dried. One ton of coal can be extracted with three to four tons of water.

The use of the sluicing gear means that each face can be operated by only two men. ‘‘Pravda” said that the hydraulic mines have proved their worth, and the Soviet Coal Ministry had decided to provide 19 collieries m Russia with the new equipment.
