SCHOOL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS

Small Attendances At Most Meetings

Apparently because many parents did not know that biennial householders' meetings were being held throughout Canterbury and Westland last evening to elect school committees, attendances in most cases were small and the discussions brief. Although newspapers and radio stations had given prior publicity, many schoc s did nothing to advise householders of the meetings. Others were 3- content with nailing the statutory nctice on the school dooor, which is the minimum requirement, i Some, which sent circulars to every home, still had only 20 present, but most which adopted this procedure had good resutls. The best attendance reported was 100 at Cashmere. The new Quinns

Road School had 80. Its parent- ' 'teacher association has had more than 200 at meetings. Mairehau, which -opened ‘with keen support a few years ago, had only 20. Halswell ‘ residents, who have fought hard for the new school officially opened on

Saturday, had 43, and the two-year-Ipld Paparoa Street school had 45. In many cases there were 20 or fewer. Some of the biggest schools had the most disappointing meetings. The St. Albans meeting was over in 20

minutes and only three persons not on the committee attended. West

Spreydon finished in half an hour with only the committee present. Shirley, which had 1000 pupils before new schools were built in the area.

had only 11. Some of the other meetings with 2good numbers were: Phillipstown 64. Burwood 52. Bamford 47, Ham 40. Waltham 43, North New Brighton 40,

Belfast 36, Wools ton 30. Country schools in some cases had ' large attendance. There were 48 at Leithfield, 40 at Cust, and 37 at : jHanmer Springs. Proportionately, the Cerebral Palsy 'School in Christchurch showed up well with 20 present. f r - Resolutions Carried >4 Most meetings were quiet but at ' others resolutions were carried. ,-Wharenui, with 60 present, protested jsbout the inadequacy of grants for essentials as fuel, maintenance, and grounds work and about “temporary classrooms becoming permanent.” Sydenham householders criticised the “disgraceful condition of the grounds about which representations had been made for 20 years, and also complained about air pollution from a bituminous roofing factory nearby. The New Brighton District High School meeting said that apart from two basketball courts sealed the rest of the grounds were virtually all .shingle, yet a section next door, Required a year ago, had not "been developed. Fendalton asked for a pedestrian crossing over Clyde road for the children. Heathcote Valley protested about an oil pipeline going through the school property. The Riccarton meeting objected to classes anywhere having to be accommpdated in local halls and to the inadequacy of its own water supply for 880 pupils. Linwood North contended that assembly halls should ultimately be provided for primary schools. North New Brighton asked that the -Education Department meet the cost of school sports gear. l “ Normal School Praised Elmwood has the first committee in New Zealand for a normal school. Householders, who previously objected strenuously to having a “practising” school, last evening agreed that the change had been generally beneficial. Aranui set up a special committee to raise funds for a swimming bath. Burwood plans to enlarge the swimming pool. At New Brighton South it was announced that the four new classrooms and a dental clinic would be ready in about two months. The size of school committees ranges from five to nine, according to the roll In most cases only the required number of nominations was received. Quinns Road had the keenest contest with 18 and the Kaikoura District High School had the first election for 18 years. Altogether nearly 2000 seats were filled.
