Senator Hits At U.S. Policy
WASHINGTON, April 17. Senate - Mike Majisfleld (Democrat, Montana) said today that any attempt by the Eisenhower Administration to carry out its “dangerous new doctrine” of limited atomic war might lead to national suicide.
He asserted that such a policy was only a wishful attempt at trying to control any atomic war. Senator Mansfield said the latest move along “this dangerous path” was the new doctrine expounded by the Secretary of State. Mr Dulles, at a press conference on March 15 and endorsed by President Eisenhower the next day. Mr Eisenhower said he saw no reason why atomic weapons should not be used if they could be directed at strictly military targets. Senator Mansfield expressed his fears in a speech which he will deliver in the Senate tomorrow but made public today. He voiced doubts that even tactical atomic weapons had such accuracy that they could be limited to strictly military targets. Senator Mansfield devoted much of his speech to the alarms voiced about the possible radiati nn -'(Teets from the radioactive fallout f rent hydrogen and atomic 1 He said the Ur i Government either did the information to discrcd ars or, If it did. the inform? <. kept under a tight lit} of seerte .
