Mrs M. E. Allen (Hereford street west) left yesterday by air on the first stage of her journey to Chicago, where she will visit her daughter, Mrs Gerald Sherman. Mrs A. F. Johnson, president of the New Zealand Free Kindergarten Union, left yesterday for the south, where she will visit Mosgiel, Gore and other centres before attending the opening ceremony of a new kindergarten at Balclutha on Saturday.

The four American Girl Scouts— Mrs James Morgan, Mrs Jacqueline Steele (leaders), Misses S. Gemmell and Francis Gillham (senior scouts), who visited Christchurch a few weeks ago, have almost completed a seven weeks tour in Australia and New Zealand travelling under Juliette Lowe Fellowships. They will leave for America on April 30.

Useful skills for domestic life on farms are being taught to members of Country Girls’ Clubs in a course which began at Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, yesterday. The course, which will last a week, is attended by 34 women who have come from all parts of New Zealand. Twenty-six of them are living at the college. The syllabus includes floral art, the planning of the farm garden, the propagation of trees, shrubs and flowers and elementary poultrykeeping.

Officers were elected as follows at the annual meeting of the associates group of the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women:— chairman, Mrs L. Acheson; secretary, Mrs J. Lewis; treasurer, Miss V. Oppenheim; delegate to the National Council of Women, Miss H. K. LovellSmith; Cole’s place sub-committee, Mesdames C. M. Boxs (convener), L. Acheson, G. M. Davis, J. Lewis, ana S. Robinson. Miss M. Arnold, the retiring president, thanked members for their assistance during her year’s term of office. A demonstration on church decorations was given by Mrs H. E. Radley at the monthly meeting of the Godley Group of the New Zealand Pioneers’ and Descendants’ Club. The competitions were won as follows: Arrangement of berries: Miss I. Wheatley 1, Mrs L. F. Emmerson 2, Mrs H. Foster 3. Vase of autumn leaves: Miss 1. Nunweek 1, Miss I. Wheatley 2, Mrs H. Foster 3. Three blooms: Mrs G. E. Patton 1. Mrs H. H. Gardiner 2. Mrs H. Foster 3. Miss Mary Wigley presided. Mrs Elsie M. White (honorary secretary), assisted by Mrs F. S. Palmer, welcomed the guests. Mrs A. Schumacher moved a vote of thanks to the speaker. The April afternoon social of the women’s section of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association was hold in the Jellicoe Hall. Mrs H. A. Bishop presided and thanked members for the work they did to make the recent fair at the Disabled Servicemen’s Re-establishment League such a success. Arrangements were made to man a corner on Poppy Day. The musical programme was provided by the Christchurch centre of the Country Women’s Institute. Competitions were won by Mrs McKee and Mrs Henderson.

During the year members of the Home Economics Association assisted with street appeals and the sale of Health Stamps, says the report which will be presented at the annual meeting later this week. Two members made hand-made gifts for funds for the sponsored boy. With this help and a collection £5 was voted to the boy’s mother in Glasgow and £2 to the mother of a former sponsored boy. Members heard a series of interesting talks during the year. The needlecraft circle recently voted £5 to Heritage. The garden circle was responsible for the floral decorations at the meetings, and the music circle gave several items.

The Somerfleld Townswomen’s Guild arts and crafts division met last week when Mrs B. Hill gave a demonstration on loose cover making. Miss Brewer, the retiring secretary, was presented with a small gift in recognition of her capable services.

Mrs L. Cumming presided at a meeting of the North Canterury Po*i and Telegraph Women’s Association. Mr and Mrs F. Cooper and company presented drama, vocal and instrumental items that were enjoyed. A mad hatter's parade was won by Mesdames Bain and Burrows and competitions for the best bloom was won by Mrs Bruce with Mrs Grossman second and Mrs Jamieson third.
