MARTON WATER SHORTAGE
ARMY STILL CARTING SUPPLIES (New Zealand Press Association) WANGANUI, April 17. Though light rain fell in Marton for three hours late this afternoon, the borough’s acute water shortage has not been eased. The Mayor (Mr W. Meads) said that, through* the carting of water by the Army, the town was “just holding its own,” and would continue to do so if citizens continued to co-operate. The Marton and Marton Junction Schools, which have been closed since the Easter holidays, will reopen tomorrow morning. At the week-end, Army vehicles carted 232,400 gallons of water from the Rangitikei river, and all but 7000 gallons was pumped into the filter tanks at Tutaenui. The Marton Hospital received the 7000 gallons direct.
