"OUR TOWN”

Sir, —I should like to join your reviewer “C.E.S.” in his praise of the Repertory Society’s presentation of “Our Town,” particularly his tribute to Mr Newman’s production that ”a natural unforced presentation was aimed at and achieved.” The power of Wilder’s play lies in its utter simplicity. Yet the workmanship and restraint needed to bring off this simplicity without straining the acting resources of an amateur cast is (or so it seems to me) of a far higher order of artistry than that involved in bringing off any conventional theatrical success (such as “Escapade”) even with professional actors. Mr Newman’s achievement sets new standards for us in Christchurch.—Yours, etc.,

R. N. O’REILLY. April 16, 1955.
