COMMUNIST PIONEERS
Sir,—ll I may butt in on a discussion between "Obadiah” and "1914-1918 : Soldier,” may I say I quite agree with the latter. The term "com- , munist,” as applied to the Russian socialists, is a misnomer. These people are direct descendants (spiritually) of the commune of Paris during 1871. They are revolutionary socialists, who would attain socialism by force. Even the ideal of socialism seems to have been lost. But "1914-18 Soldier ' is right—communism did develop in England. From 1924 onwards Robert Owen, a wealthy cottonmill operator, unselfishly carried out experiments in social reform along the lines of communal ownership. His experiments cost him his fortune. Sir Thomas More, in his “Utopia,” and Plato, in his •’Republic,” wrote about a form of communism also —Plato, long before the birth of Christ.—Yours, etc., A.F.P. April 16, 1955.
