FIRE DAMAGES TRUCK
Fire badly damaged a light truck owned by the Christchurch Gas Company about 7.15 pm. on Saturday. A compressor and small petrol engine mounted on the truck, which was parked in a yard behind the company’s offices in Oxford terrace, were burnt out.
Coils of rubber hosing attached to the compressor burned fiercely and gave off clouds of smoke which quickly drew a large crowd into the narrow alleyway. A strong smell of burning rubber spread down Oxford terrace and Worcester street. Four fire engines of the Christchurch central brigade answered the but the fire was extinguished first aid hose from one vehicle. Damage to the truck included compute destruction of the cab fittings, blistered and twisted side-panels, and ° f tbe windscreen and .. broke out in a heap of slack in theFygrave street yard of the Westport C«npeuy yesterday aftery* l outbreak, which caused no tin which received a can at 4.4 pm One unit from the Central was called to a rerub fire on a proprety occupied by Mr J. At 7.7 P-p - the St. Albans station sent a unit to attend a rubbish fire which had been left burning on a jajant section in Hills road near Briggs road The fire did no damage •d was put out without trouble.
