DEATH OF LORD KIRKWOOD
(Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, April IS. Lord Kirkwood of Bearsden, who was the last of the famous group of “Wild Clydeside” Labour members of Parliament in the 1920’s and 1930’5, died in a hospital at Glasgow today, aged 82. Known as “Battling Davie” or “Rebel Davie” Kirkwood, he spent his life fighting for the old and the poor. In the years between the two world wars he struggled desperately to relieve unemployment in the Clydeside shipyards and in 1934 he was successful. Because of his efforts work was finally restarted on an unfinished hulk which the world knows today as the giant luxury liner Queen Mary. He was first elected a member of Parliament in 1922 and in 1951, after nearly 28 years in the House of Commons was created a Baron.
