CHINESE LEADER ARRIVES

Enthusiastic Welcome To Mr Chou

(Rec. 10 p.m.) JAKARTA, April 16. Cheering thousands of Indonesians gave the clenched fist salute outside Jakarta airport today when the Chinese Communist Prime Minister (Mr Chou En-lai) arrived for the African-Asian conference. Mr Chou was the last of the delegates to arrive today and the only one to spend the night in Jakarta instead of going on to Bandung. He is spendihg the night under a heavy Indonesian army guard behind the high walls and barred steel gates of the Chinese Embassy. Chinese officials waited from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the airfield for Mr Chou’s arrival. They did not take part in the welcomes to other delegates. About 100 Chinese from the Communist Embassy greeted him when he stepped from an Indian aircraft wearing a plain grey high-necked Chinese uniform. He was presented with flowers and seven minutes later left the airport in a black sedan. He did not acknowledge the cheers of the crowd when he left, with truckloads of military police before him. Armed soldiers had difficulty in restraining an enthusiastic crowd of Indonesians and Chinese, who broke through the barriers. Correspondents and photographers, who had been allowed close to other delegates, were forced back by military police from the entrance to .he lounge after army officers had consulted with Chinese officials.
