WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Sefton-Kowal.—Magazines to be sent to Burwood hospital patients were handed in at the March meeting of the SeftonKowai Country Women’s Institute. Sympathy was expressed with the relatives of Mrs Dunn, who died recently. Arrangements .were made for a travel talk by Dr. Jacobson, on May 11, in the Sefton public aall, in aid of the Italian sponsored child. Mrs Ashworth (voluntary organiser) presented prizes won during the year as follows:—Cup for most points in best bloom section: Mrs White and Mrs Mitchell (equal) 1, Mis Dalzell 2. Cup for small bloom: Mrs White. Spike or cluster section: Mrs McGiffert. Prizes were presented to points winners in other competitions. At the annual meeting following the monthly meeting Mrs Mitchell read the report for the year, showing satisfactory progress in all activities. A donation to the institute housekeeper fund was passed for payment. Mrs Ashworth gave a short talk on aims and objects of the movement. Glentunnel.—The annual meeting of the Glentunnel Country Women’s Institute was held recently. There was a large attendance of members. Mesdames Candy and Macßae (Christchurch) were present, and Mrs Candy spoke. The following officers were elected: President, Mrs C. Blair; vice-president, Mrs A. Lakeside.—Mrs L. Cooper presided at the annual ( meeting of the Ldkeside Country Women’s Institute. Representatives of the Taumutu Maori Welfare were present. Their president (Mrs W. Stretz) thanked the members for their hospitality. Sympathy was expressed with a member who was in hospital. One new member was enrolled. Birthday sprays were presented to four members. The retiring president (Mrs L. Cooper), secretary (Mrs R. Lambie), and acting-treasurer and link secretary were each presented with gifts of appreciation of their services. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mrs R. Hampton; secretary, Mrs W. Quigley; treasurer, Mrs C. A. Croft; link secretary, Mrs F. Chambers; committee, Mesdames A. E. Brown, G. Barnett, C. A. Scargill-Motunau.—Mrs J. Gardiner presided at the March meeting of the Scargill-Motunau Country Women’s Institute. Mrs Gardiner and her committee were re-elected for the ensuing year. A letter from the sponsored child’s mother was also read. Mr Brown showed several interesting, films—many of his trip to England and Ireland and some of local interest. The hostesses were Mesdames Alan and White. Monthly competition results were:—Large bloom: Mrs Tomlinson 1, Mrs Fraser 2, Mrs Leach 3. Small bloom: Mrs Tomlinson 1, Mrs J. Gardiner 2. Mrs Leach 3. Spike on cluster: Mrs Tomlinson. 1, Mrs White 2. Best dahlia: Mrs Leach. Sponge mil: Mrs J. Gardiner.

Kaiapoi—The annual report of the Kaiapoi Country Women’s Institute showed a busy and successful year. Members contributed to the many local and overseas appeals. Parcels of food and clothing were sent overseas. Garments were knitted for Karitane Hospital and a parcel sent to the sponsored child in Greece. Good service badges were presented to Mrs Bristow and Toyrell. The Peaks.—Mrs L. H. Hassall presided at the annual meeting of The Peaks Country Women’s Institute. Sprays were presented to the retiring president and secretary, who gave reports on the year’s nrogramme. Officers were elected as follows:—president, Mrs F. Costello; secretary, Mrs Duckmanton; vice-presidents, senior, Mrs L. Quiglev; junior, Mrs F. Quigley: treasurer, Mrs J. L. Hassall: competition steward. Miss Crean; flowers for the sick, Mrs L. H. Hassall and Mrs E, Rogers; press reporter, Miss E. Hubert. The award for most points in the year’s competitions was won by Mrs F. Quigle/, and Mrs Rogers was second.
