TROTTING Light Brigade Tops List Of Sires At Addington

The feature of the three days of the jfew Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meeting at Addington w as the success of a Roydon Lodge

Stud sire. Light Brigade, the progeny of which won £6600, or slightly less than one-quarter of the £27,300 distributed in stakes at the meeting. Another feature was the failure of the other Roydon Lodge Stud sire, U. Scott, the progeny of which failed to win a race. They recorded five placings worth £635. putting U. Scott in thirteenth place on the list. U. Scott is the leading sire of the season, and is in an almost unbeatable position. When figures were last published m the New Zealand Trotting Calendar Dillon Hall was in second place, but the success of Light Brigade’s progeny at Addington may place him ahead of Dillon Hall, but still behind U. Scott. Light Brigade sired Recruit, the outstanding trotter at the meeting, Barravey and Superfortress, which among them won four of the six races at the meeting for horses of their gait. One of the other races, the New Zealand Trotting Stakes, was won by Royal Mile, a son of Fourth Brigade, which was got by Light Brigade. His best winner among the pacers was the unbeaten Starbeam, which earned £1920. Light Brigade’s progeny won eight races and were nine times placed. Josedale. Grattan s progeny had more success than for sortie time, and among them they gained three wins and seven placings worth £3175. Denbry, with £l3OO from his Rattray Handicap success, was his largest contributor.

Josedale Grattan, which is now at the stud in Australia, was a great racehorse in New Zealand, and numbered the New Zealand Cup among his wins. Young Bob owes his third placing on the list mainly to the two wins of Excelsa.-which earned £2540. Dillon Hall had few progeny to represent him, but they had fair success, gaining two wins and seven placings worth £1945. Grattan Loyal’s progeny won £llO less than that of DiUon Hall. Sixth on. the list was the Quite Sure horse. Whipster, whose oldest progeny are only three-year-olds. Glint won the New Zealand Welcome Stakes, and Don Hall won an open handicap. His place-getter was Lady Vai. a smart three-year-old. Of the 14 horses that sired the winners of £5OO or more, seven were colonial-bred.
