WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Mt. Pleasant.—Mrs McGregor-Smith presided at the monthly meeting of the Mt. Pleasant Country Women’s Institute. An interesting letter from Mrs W. E. Turland, who is at present in England, was read. The meeting then discussed remits for the annual meeting of the Canterbury Federation. Tentative arrangements were made for celebrating the institute’s twenty-fifth birthday, in July, and a special committee of six members was appointed. There was approval of the suggestion that, to mark this occasion, a commemorative shrubbery, accompanied by a suitable plaque, be established at the War Memorial Community Centre, authorities concerned to be approached on the matter. The secretary reported that the service held at the community centre on Founder’s Day had attracted a large number from institutes in Christchurch. Monthly competitions resulted:—Floral spray: Mrs Parr. Tapestry: Mrs J. E. Mason. Best bloom: Mrs Park. Gingerbread: Mrs Stevenson.. Hawarden.—At the annual meeting of the Hawarden Country Women’s Institute Mrs Kellock presided over a good attendance. The following officers were elected: President, Mrs L. D. Hood; secretary. Mrs D. S. Binning; treasurer, Mrs W. D. Yorston. The retiring officers were each presented with floral T sprays. Competitions resulted:—Large bloom: Mrs Avery 1, Mrs Hood 2, Mrs Kellock 3. Le Bons Bay.—There was a good attendance at the February meeting of the Le Bons Bay C.W.I. Mrs L. Crotty presided. Mrs Spurr was presented with a money box for her baby. Competitions resulted: Pot raspberry jam: Mrs C. MacKay 1, Mrs G. Fraser 2, Mrs Reed 3. Bowl mixed flowers: Mrs Reed 1, Mrs E. Mac Kay 2. Miss Mould 3. Best bloom: Mrs G. Fraser 1, Miss Mould 2. Mrs Herron 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Elphick and Grant. Akaroa.—Sympathy was expressed with Miss E. Keegan in the death of her mother, at the monthly meeting of the Akaroa Country Women’s Institute. Mrs Chappell who is leaving the district was presented with a bouquet. It was decided to give £5 5s to the Dominion executive committee for furniture for the flat at the Wellington office building* Mrs E. I. Cowan gave an interesting and informative talk. on the city of Lincoln. She was a member of the city council for eight years. Mayor in. 1950-51 and deputyMayor in 1951-52. Waipara.—Mrs Thomson presided at the twenty-second annual meeting of the Waipara Country Women’s Institute. Officers were elected as follows: President. Mrs Thomson; secretary, Mrs Scott; treasurer, Mrs Munro; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames Hawke, Uren and Beamsley; committee, Mesdames Farrant, Croft. Smith, Bartie. Nelson and Emms. The winner of the cup for most points for the year was Mrs Smith, with Mrs Hawke second. Posies were presented to the retiring officers by Mrs Hawke.

Rotherham.—-The. annual, meeting of Rotherham Country Women’s Institute was held in the hall. The report showed a fairly satisfactory year. Mrs Earl was the winner of the cup for most points in all sections of the competitions. Mrs Henderson was runner-up. Officers were elected as follows:—President, Mrs Henderson; secretary, Mrs Allan; committee, Mesdames J. Clark. C. Popplewell, W. Munro, Flintbff and McKinnon.

Omihi.—Mrs Harrison presided at the March meeting of the Omihi Country Women’s Institute. One new member was welcomed. Mrs A. Campbell was appointed delegate to the annual meeting of the Federation, on April 28 at Sefton. At the annual meeting the following officers were elected:—President, Mrs Harrison; vice-presidents, Mrs J. Moss and Mrs A. Chapman; secretary. Miss A. Stackhouse; treasurer, Mrs J. Stackhouse; committee, Mesdames A. Wyllie, A. Croft, A. Campbell, C. Brown, M. Horn and P. Inkson; competitions judges, Miss S. McLean and Miss B. Wyllie, Mrs J. Sloss and Mrs C. Burrows. Monthly competition results were: —Large bloom: Miss A. Stackhouse 1, Mrs A. Campbell 2. Small bloom: Mrs Campbell 1, Mrs J. Wyllie 2. Collection three dahlias: Mrs Campbell 1, Mrs A. Stackhouse and Mrs A. Campbell (equal) 2. Iced chocolate cake: Mrs G. McLean 1, Mrs J. Stackhouse 2. Jar raspberry ;am: Mrs J. McLean 1, Mrs G. McLean 2.

Loburn.—The annual meeting of the Loburn Country Women’s Institute was held in the Coronation Hall. Officers were elected as follows:—president, Mrs McLeod; vice-presidents. Mrs Doak and Mrs C. Hiatt; secretary, Miss B. Metherell; treasurer, Mrs F. Waterworth. Sprays were presented to the guest speaker (Mrs B. L. Blunden), the retiring committee, and officers by Mrs R. Meyers and Mrs Goldsbury. It was decided to ho Id. a dance at ■an early date. Mrs R. Meyers was selected delegate for the federation meeting at Sefton. Mrs Blunden (president of the North Canterbury Federation) displayed useful gifts and gave an address. Hostesses for afternoon tea were Mrs Pulley and Miss Waters. Competition results were as follows:—large bloom: Mrs Anderson and Mrs Goldsbury (equal) 1, Mrs King 3, Miss B. Metherell 4. Small bloom: Mrs Crooks 1, Mrs Anderson 2, Miss Waters 3. Cluster: Miss B. South Brighton.—The South Brighton Country Women’s Institute held its iiftn birthday party this month. Mrs Ogden presided and welcomed representatives from the Dominion and Canterbury Federat’on, and also the Christchurch group. An enjoyable programme comprised songs by Mrs J. Scrimshaw, a sketch by the South Brighton drama circle, country dancing by the country dance club, and a recitation by Mrs Walker. Waikari. —The monthly meeting of the Waikari Country Women’s Institute was held recently. Mrs C. H. Bethell presided, and welcomed two new members and a visitor. Recitations were given by Miss Caygill. A competition was arranged by Mrs Kellaway. Prizes were presented to the winners of most points in the monthly competitions. The hew committee was elected, the president being Mrs Kellaway. The hostesses were Mrs A. Earl and Mrs R. Earl. Results of competitions were:—chocolate sponge roll: Mrs S. Campbell 1, Mrs Palmer 2.
