SECOND HIGHEST ON RECORD

New Zealand’s export trade for the year 1954 was valued at £244,400,000 —the second highest figure on record. This is stated in the March issue of the Monthly Abstract of Statistics. Only in 1951 was. this figure exceeded, when through the exceptionally high wool values, the value of: exports reached £ 248,100,000, the abstract says. In 1954, Britain took 66.6 per cent, of the exports, or 1 per cent, less than in 1953, but 10 per cent, more than in 1951.

The import trade for the year 1954 was valued at £213,100,000. This figure was second only to that of 1952 when the value recorded was £229,400,000. Britain in 1954 supplied 56.6 per cent, of the imports, or only slightly more than in 1953. Notable increases in the values of imports as compared with the previous year, were in motor-vehicles (57.3 per cent, rise), drugs, chemicals and manures (50.5 per cent, rise) and apparel, textiles, fibres and yarns (49.4 per cent, riseh New Zealand’s total external trade a head of population rose from £195 in 1953 to £218.5 in 1954.
