BOWLS 27 FOURS QUALIFY IN EASTER TOURNAMENT

Conditions yesterday for the third day of the Christchurch Bowling Centre's Easter tournament were again ideal, with the greens still reasonably fast and true.

Two rounds of section play were held and at the end there were 27 fours who had won six or more games to qualify for post-section play. One round of post-section play was then held.

Deavoll . (Belfast), who has been prominent in centre tournaments this year, had won five games on the first two days and required only one yesterday to qualify. He seemed assured of this when about to play' the last head of the first game against Cowles (Papanul), who had already qualified by winning his first six games. Deavoll was 14-11 up with one head to play, and, on a head on which he only had one bowl, he tried to burn the head but removed his own bowl and went down six to lose, 17-14. In his next game he met McKenzie (Woolston), who had no hope of qualifying, and, playing carefree bowls McKenzie also beat Deavoll, 15-12. This second loss on the day kept Deavoll out of post-section play. Of the five fours who won their first six games, only Ashton (Canterbury) and Cowles (Papanul) were unbeaten at the end of the section play. Hickman (Sydenham) won one more game to finish with seven wins and in the post-section play he drew a bye The Sydenham elub is well to the fore tn the tournament. It has four teams competing, and all qualified and survived the first round of post-section play.

McGarry (Christchurch), requiring one win to qualify, went down in his first game to Hickman, 15-13, but won the last game against Maloney (Papanui), 20-15.

The winner of last year’s champion of champion singles, Sheard (Woolston), had a comfortable Win over Nicholls (New Brighton) in the first round of post-section play. The second round, quarter and semifinals will be played on the Barrington green today.
