Canberra Sets New Tasman Record

BRISBANE, February 24. A Royal Australian Air Force Canberra jet bomber yesterday set an unofficial air record from Auckland to Brisbane.

The aircraft flew the 1416 miles across the Tasman Sea in 2 hours 49 minutes.

The Canberra was piloted by Flight Lieutenant C. G. Kelsby, with Flight Flight Lieutenant Geoff Hughes as navigator. They faced cockpit temperatures of minus 63 degrees Centigrade as they- cruised at 43.000 feet at 490 miles an hour.

Flight Lieutenants Kelsby and Hughes were returning frdm the New Zealand Air Force base at Whenuapai.
