Airline Strike In Australia

MELBOURNE February 24. Australian National Airways has cancelled all DC-3 aeroplane services scheduled for today. The company stood down at least 60 pilots for refusing to fly DC-3 aeroplanes loaded beyond 25,2001 b. A.N.A. announced that more than 1000 passengers will be unable to travel today because of the cancelled services.

The managing director of A.N.A. (Captain Holyman) said that 18 DC-3’s would be grounded until the dispute is settled.

The civil aviation regulations provide that all DC-3’s may fly with an all-up weight of 26,2001 b for passengers and 26,9001 b for freight carriage. The Airline Pilots* Association says that it believes that these maximum weights are too high for DC-3’s powered with Wright Cyclone engines.
