CURRENT NOTES

Commodore Sir Charles Madden, R.N., and Lady Madden (Wellington) will be guests of Captain and Mrs George Dennistoun, Fendalton, during a short visit to Christchurch. Today they will be the honoured guests at a luncheon party to be given by the president and executive of the Canterbury branch of the Navy League.

Lady Allum and her daughter will accompany Sir John Allum when he leaves Auckland by air on Thursday on his way to the International Labour Organisation conference that will open in Geneva on June 1. Sir John and Lady Allum expect to return to New Zealand on October 25. Mr and Mrs F. Spencer, Rata street, left Wellington by the Wanganella for Sydney, where they will spend a short holiday. They were accompanied by their daughter, Miss Hilary Spencer, and Miss Jennifer Mac Kay, Woodham road.

Mrs B. Hayes presided at the opening meeting for the year of the Beckenham Townswomen’s Guild. One new member was welcomed. Members stood in silence in memory of a lat£ member, Mrs Oliver. Reports of the guild’s activities were received from Mesdames W. Grenfell (area), A. Thomson (gardening), A. Bootten (arts and crafts), C. Ironside (civic), R. Allison (choir), and Wright (drama). Mrs Wright read letters from the guild’s link guild at Tolworth, England. A humorous play was presented by the drama group, Mesdames Wright, Jackson, and Turner, and the choir under the leadership of Mrs R. Allison sang two part-songs. Mrs Hayes returned thanks. Scholarships of £2OO a year have been awarded by the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music to Miss Barbara June Connelly, of Newton, Auckland, and Miss Evelyn Irene Dackers, of Moana crescent, Dunedin. Both awards are for three years’ study in London at one of the Royal Schools of Music. Miss Connelly will go to the Royal Academy of Music, and Miss Dackers to the Royal College of Music. Both are expected to take up their awards within a year.—(P.A.) News has been received in Christchurch that Leslie Atkinson, formerly of Westport, who studied pianoforte playing in Christchurch, and who was granted a New Zealand bursary to study in London, was chosen out of 30 applicants to play, with full orchestra, in London, the second Rawsthorne concerto. The performance was well received; Mr Atkinson responded tc four curtain calls,. and the critic ol “The Times” gave him warm praise Mr Atkinson recently gained his bachelor of music in London, and was successful in his A.R.C.M. performers’ examination.

Members of the Canterbury Women’s Club, last evening expressed sympathy with the relatives of Mrs T. Kennedy, a member who died recently, and also with Mrs L. Casey, a member, and Mr Casey, in the death of their son, Flight Lieutenant E. D. Casey.

The February meeting of the Woodend Garden Club was held in the local hall. Mrs J. Keeper presided. The guest speaker was Mr Mcllroy, of Lincoln College, whose subject was lilies. Competition results were as follows: one stein of lily, Mrs Macann 1; fish tin of flowers, Mrs Ballinger and Mrs H. Petrie (equal) 1, Mrs Macann 3; three tomatoes, Mrs Ballinger I, Mrs H. Petrie 2, Mrs Macann 3.

Mrs V. Barnett presided at the February meeting of the garden circle of the Christchurch branch of the Overseas League. The guest speaker was Mrs L. Morrison. Competitions resulted: white container of white petalled flowers, A section, Mrs L. Smith 1, Mrs Restell Thomas 2, and Mrs D. Orchard and Mrs M. Wilson (equal) 3; B section, Mrs L. Smith 1, Mrs H. Laban 2, Mrs Orchard 3; best bloom of one dahlia, Mrs A J. Smith 1, Mrs Laban 2, Mrs Orchard 3.

Indonesia has sent two graduates to the Wellington training school for den.tal nurses to do post-graduate study. They are the Misses Louise Ong and Irna Ali. They bring the number of overseas students who have trained at the dental clinic in Wellington to 19. There have been' 12 from Ceylon, four from Malaya, and one from Borneo. The Friends of the Deaf Society, which in the last two years has raised £15,000 toward the cost of an Institute for the Deaf, will have a special interest in the Inter-Dominion trotting sale at Epsom tomorrow. Proceeds from the sale of one of the lots, Queen Cobra, will be given to the society, to which the mare was presented by Mr and Mrs D. Rice, of Auckland. Queen Cobra is an unraced four-year-old by Kingcobra from Loyal Peg, by Grattan xuoyal. The annual picnic of the Spreydon Sub-centre of the Red Cross Society was held at the Botanic Gardens. Mrs H. Sturge presided at a brief meeting 'when three new members were welcomed. Preliminary arrangements were made for a function to be held soon to assist the Red Cross building fund. Members will assist with the preparation of vegetables for the Good Neighbour Service during March. A competition was won by Mrs Low.
