NEW LICENSING COMMITTEES
ELECTION NECESSARY IN CHRISTCHURCH ELEVEN NOMINATIONS FOR FIVE SEATS Eleven nominations for the five seats on the recently-constituted Christchurch Licensing Committee had been received by the returning officer (Mr C. J. L. McCree), when nominations closed at noon yesterday. An election will be necessary, and this will be held on March 8. Among the nominations received are those of Messrs W. G. Carpenter, A. A. Dingwall and J. D. Gray, three members of the previous Christchurch Licensing Committee, whose district comprised the electorates of Christchurch Central, St. Albans, and Sydenham. Messrs C. A. G. Catto and A. F. Fisher, both former members of the Selwyn committee, who are no longer in the Selwyn district through changes in the electoral boundaries, have also been nominated for the new Christ- j church committee. Until 11 a.m. yesterday, Mr McCree had received only two nominations, but in the last hour before nominations closed, a further nine nominations were recorded. Elections will not be necessary for the Selwyn, Lyttelton and Hurunui Licensing Committees. For the Lyttelton committee only four nominations were recorded for the five seats, so the four nominees have been elected and with a Magistrate, will comprise the committee. The following are the new Selwyn, Lyttelton and Hurunui committees (new members are indicated by asterisks):— Selwyn— Joseph James Allan*, Thomas Francis Carter*, Gordon Marcus Doyle, Malcolm Ernest Jenkins, Robert Thomas McMillan. Lyttelton—Robert Ernest Cairns, William Thomas Lester, William Arthur Newton*, Thomas Cyril Boyce*. Hurunui— Arthur Burke, Ellis Porter Shier, Henry Robert Tyler, Charles William Tyler, Norman Robert Wilkinson*. The following nominations have been received for the Christchurch committee: — William George Carpenter, Curll Alexander Gordon Catto, James Neil Clarke, Joseph Irvine Colligan, Claude Aurelian Cooper, Allen Augustine Dingwall, Stanley Edmund Snow Dwight, Alan Frederick Fisher. John Douglas Gray, Donald Chamberlain Haberfield, Warren Thomas Kaier.
