SAILPLANE AS AIR FREIGHT
TRANSPORT TO NELSON FOR PAGEANT (From Our Own Reporter) NELSON. February 21. The Royal New Zealand Air Force came to the rescue of the Canterbury Glider Club at the week-end when it provided a Bristol freighter to fly an Eon Baby sailplane from Christchurch to Nelson for next Saturday’s Royal New Zealand Aero Club peageant. The Bristol was from No. 41 Transport Squadron based on Whenuapai, and was in the course of an operational tour of New Zealand. The Canterbury Glider Club had intended sending its sailplane to Nelson by road, but when it appeared that this might not be possible because of flooding, the Air Force offered to undertake the task.
The Bristol Freighter landed at Nelson shortly after 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon, and was unloaded by members of the Nelson Aero Club. The sailplane, a single-seater specially designed for aerobatics, had been dismantled before being dispatched from Christchurch, and it will be reassembled on Thursday by a member of the Canterbury Glider Club ready for Saturday.
