POLICE FORCE RECRUITING
MINISTER REPORTS PROGRESS
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 22. Twenty former members of the Police Force had applied for re-entry into the force since the announcement a month ago that they were eligible, but the shortage of trained men was causing a number of administrative difficulties, said the Minister in charge of Police (Mr E. H. Halstead) today. The Police Commission was examining means of attracting more men to build up the force to its desirable strength of 2000, said the Minister. There were 1669 men in the Police Force, 17 more than there were a year ago, and 68 more than there were two years ago. “We are a long way from solving the manpower difficulties, but we are making progress,” Mr Halstead added. “I am confident that the Police Force will become a more attractive career as a result of the revisions and improvements in employment conditions that are being carried out by the commission.”
