MEN STRIKE AT MURUPARA
BUILDING TRADES DISPUTE DISMISSAL OF TWO PAINTERS (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 22. About 140 carpenters, painters, and labourers at Murupara went on strike during the lunch hour today shortly after two men—one of them the walking delegate of the Murupara Painters’ Union—had been dismissed on the ground of incompetence. A stop-work meeting was called by the various unions at 12.30 p.m., and it was agreed to strike without a secret ballot. A conference between representatives of all three unions and the employers—the associate dcompanies of Tapper, Churchouse, and Shirley, Ltd. —failed to produce a settlement. The companies are building more than 170 houses by contract at the Murupara township for lumbermen and officials of the Kaingaroa Logging Company. It is the first strike by labour at Murupara. The three unions, which allege that the painters’ delegate and another painter were dismissed without just cause, have called another meeting for tomorrow. A representative of the Department of Labour from Auckland and the companies’ project manager (Mr A. T. Shirley) will both be present.
