N.S.W. BEATS ENGLAND

Victory By 45 Runs

(Rec. 10 p.m.) SYDNEY, February 22. New South Wales today became the first Australian State team to beat England for 18 years. Miller’s men dismissed England for 269 today and won by 45 runs. Though England was without four of the regular test players and was handicapped by injuries to two of the four regular bowlers in the later stages, New South Wales deserved the win for the way in which it fought back after losing five wickets for 26 runs on the first morning of the match. Miller’s example was evident in his hard hitting when runs were needed quickly, in his timely declaration on the previous day and when he took the ball to break the partnership between Hutton and May by bowling May just when it seemed England was taking control. Later it was Miller who caught Evans when he was threatening to cut the attack into shreds. While it was a happy match in every way for Miller, little went right for Hutton. Apart from being involved in a dispute over the rain stoppage on the previous day and handicapped by bowling injuries, Hutton was unfortunate to be twice dismissed when batting to his own masterly standards. In the first innings he was brilliantly caught by Simpson at slip. Simpson again caught him today, this time as deputy wicket-keeper. Hutton batted for two and a half hours without fault, but once he had gone only Cowdrey and Evans showed much resistance. t J? c^ uraging news for England is that Tyson and Bailey may be fit for the final test. The selection will not be made until the afternoon before the match after a full practice session on Thursday morning.
