JUNIOR SWIMMING TITLES

FINAL EVENTS RUN AT NELSON AUCKLAND, SOUTHLAND DOMINANT (New Zealand. Press Association) NELSON, February 13. Swimmers from Auckland and Southland dominated the New Zealand junior championship meeting which ended at Nelson last night. Between them the young champions from these two centres smashed six New Zealand junior records and won 13 out of 19 titles which were at stake. Ron Knight, the brilliant Southland 16-year-old, broke his own national junior records for the 100 yards and 220 yards backstroke events. Miss Jennifer Hunter, of Auckland, junior girl freestyle champion, twice bettered the record for the 100 yards. Her team-mate. Miss Jocelyn Ross, set a new time for the 220 yards girls’ backstroke championship.

In his last year in junior ranks, the outstanding Auckland freestylist, Darrell Ramsey, equalled Noel Crump’s longstanding record of 55.8 sec for the 100 yards freestyle and carried off three championships. Another triple title-holder, Miss Lynley Orbell, of Southland, set a new record of 3min 15sec for the 220 yards girls’ breaststroke championship. Auckland won the War Memorial Shield with eight points. Then followed Southland (5), Canterbury (3), Nelson, Manawatu, Wanganui, and Wellington (1). Final points scored by centres for the Freyberg Shield were: Southland 52, Auckland 43, Nelson and Marlborough 35, Canterbury 32. Wanganui 16, Otago 11, Hawke’s Bay 6, Wellington 6, South Canterbury 5, Waikato 4, Manawatu 3, Taranaki 1, West. Coast 0. The shield is awarded to the centre gaining most points in the junior and senior championships. Thirteen-year-old Len Hodge retained his firm grip on the boys* diving title, winning by a clear 15 points from lan Horlor, of Nelson. Hodge first won the title at the age of 10 and has retained it through three contests since. Hodge dived brilliantly, but his slight build (6st 71b) was a handicap. There was a closer contest in the girls* dive. Miss F. Wentzel, of Wellington, winning by less than two points from Miss C. Davenport, of Southland. This was Wellington’s first win of the championships. The consistent Nelson-Marlborough representative, J. Stewart, won the boys’ 100 yards medley title decisively in the fast time of 66.25ec. Earlier Stewart swam second in the finals of the 100 yards freestyle and breaststroke championships. Miss Jennifer Hunter, of Auckland, won her second title at the contest when she held the lead all the way to win the 220 yards girls’ freestyle championship. Her time was just over a second slower than the record established in 1949 by Miss Winifred Griffin. Yet another record was set when Miss Lynley Orbell, of Southland, swam 220 yards breasstroke in 3min 15sec, cutting eight-tenths of a second off the record set in 1951 by Miss R. Currie, of Otago. Miss Jocelyn Ross, of Auckland, won her second backstroke title at the championships when she finished first in the 100 yards in two-fifths of a second outside the New Zealand junior record. The Stalag shield medley relay, which caused the greatest excitement of the championships, was won by the North Island team. Results:— Junior Girls’ Springboard Diving.—Miss F. MISS ROE BEATS MISS MANN THIRD CONSECUTIVE 100-YD VICTORY (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, February 13. Described by the American girl’s chaperon, Mrs Beth Kaufman, as “potentially the next Olympic 100 metres champion,” Miss Marion Roe, of Hamilton, last evening beat the touring world medley swimming champion, Miss Shelly Mann, for the third time in three starts over 100 yards freestyle. The 19-year-old New Zealand champion’s time was 60.4sec—1.8sec below her listed national record, and her second fastest performance. The time, however, did not match her 59sec dash in Hamilton last Thursday. Three thousand spectators—the biggest crowd since the 1950 Empire Games—applauded the contest between Misses Roe and Mann, and also superlative diving by the dual Olympic champion, Mrs Patricia McCormick. Miss Mann, who has found New Zealand starters disconcertingly fast, last evening gained an initial lead of two feet. When they turned into the second lap, the New Zealander had reached Miss Mann’s shoulder. Miss Roe won by half a second. “Miss Roe is the nearest thing to Ann Curtis that I have ever seen,’’ said Mrs Kaufman, referring to the former United States world record-holder, who won the 1948 Olympic 400 metres freestyle title. “If she sticks to the sprints, and does not spread her energies, she will be tough to beat at Melbourne next year. She has good temperament, and she is a fine tactician.” The Americans will leave Auckland tomorrow for Wellington.
