Four-Month Tow Of Cruiser To Clyde

(H2. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, January 20. The 9800-ton cruiser, Shropshire, former flagship of the Royal Australian Navy, arrived in the Clyde today, to be broken up after one of the longest tows in shipping history. The Dutch tug, Oadzee, had taken four months to pull her all the way from Australia. Five Clyde tugs took over today to push her up to the yards at Dalmuir, Glasgow—where she was launched 26 years ago. Only by chance was the Shropshire brought back to her birthplace to be turned into scrap. She was scheduled to be broken up at Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire, but the pilots there refused to dock her in the dark yesterday and she was diverted up to Scotland. Their action cost about 100 Barrow shipbreakers a year’s work.
