PARCELS DEPOT EXTENSION

1952 BUILDING NOW INADEQUATE

Parcels handed by the Post and Telegraph Department in Christchurch have increased so considerably in the last few years that a building completed as a parcel depot in Moorhouse avenue in 1952 has to be extended. Work began on the extensions this week. J The building, which is near the railway station, has a floor space of 5600 square feet. The alterations will add 2225 square feet. The work is being undertaken by the department itself, and it hopes to complete it in about eight weeks. After the additional have been made the whole lay-out of the premises will be re-arranged to facilitate parcel handling. The Railways Department plans to build a new siding sb that three waggons will be able to load directly into the depot. There will also be provision for bulk parcel posting by large firms. They will be able to back their vehicles against a landing near the siding.

Giving these details yesterday, the Acting Chief Postmaster (Mr C. T. McAloon), said that the whole object of the changes was to minimise handling.
