TAURANGA CUP

FOURTH RACE WON BY TWINKLE

With three wins and a secohd to his credit, R. Denniston, Tauranga’s representative in the Tauranga Cup yachting series, is in a sound position. Tauranga won the fourth race, sailed on the Waimakariri river at Stewart’s Gully yesterday, 'after Evans Bay (B. Julian) was disqualified after leading the fleet past the finishing line.

The incident which led to Julian’s disqualification, occurred as yachts were jockeying for position at the start. On the report of the floating observer, Evans Bay was disqualified for a breach of the port and starboard rule. The fourth race was sailed in a strong southerly wind, which caused many of the yachtsmen some difficulties. Eyans Bay was unfortunate to be disqualified, for in all other respects Julian handled his craft expertly. At one stage of the race his yacht, Rogue, capsized, but he righted it, and carried on to cross the finishing line first. Ponsonby (R. Grayson, Mascot) and Mount Pleasant also capsized, Ponsonby ha y nng to withdraw when his tiller was lost. Lake Mahinapua (I. Olr sen, Joy) withdrew with a broken tiller. Entirely different conditions prevailed for the fifth race. The strong southerly wind dropped in the afternoon to be replaced by a flat calm and fairly heavy rain. Yachts left the starting mark at 3.15 p.m., but before many had turned the bottom marker an hour and a quarter later, the race was abandoned. This race, the last in the series, will now be sailed this morning. The fourth race was of four laps and was sailed over a windward and leeward course. Ponsonby, Point Chevalier, Kohimarama, New Plymouth, and Tauranga all got away to a good start, and at the weather mark, the leaders were Point Chevalier, Kohimarama, Ponsonby, Mount Pleasant, Aurora, and Tauranga. Ponsonby capsized just after rounding the mark and withdraw. During this lap, Evans Bay also papsized, but was righted and was able to carry on. At the end of two laps, Tauranga had improved its position to second to Point Chevalier, and in the closing stages of the race, Evans Bay caught and passed Tauranga, with only 200 yards to the finishing line.
