YEARLING SALES END

Record Figures Established

3500GNS FOR GOLD NIB COLT

(From Our Own Reporter) B WELLINGTON, January 20. The twenty-ninth National Sale of Yearlings ended on a highly successful note at Trentham today, when Australian, New Zealand, and Fijian 1 buyers paid 91,375gns for 136 lots to give an average of 671$gns—a record E for a single day’s selling. c Today’s good figures also made possible a record average for the sales. Total figures for this year’s sale were g 279 yearlings sold for 177,955gns—an average of 640gns. The previous best E average was 617gns received last year, when there was an aggregate of 157.285gns from the sale of 255 young- £ sters The influence of Australian buyers e on this year’s sale was marked, and but for their activity the result would ( not have been very good. The Australians this year took 124 lots, and in E doing so spent 91,330gn5. Last year they spent 53,765gns in buying 90 head. Strong drafts from the Trelawney. _ Alton Lodge. Santa Rosa, and Okawa studs heightened the interest and boosted activity today. Thirty lots changed hands at four-figure prices, e and more than 3000gns was paid for a filly. This was a bay by Gabador from the English-bred Sagati, offered by Mr R. H. W. Holden, of Boukawa, owner- C breeder of Hot Drop (the Telegraph Handicap winner at Trentham last Saturday), also of the brilliant per- _ formers Sweet Nymph and Sweet Spray. Opening Bid 2000gns Bidding for this beautifully-rounded E i filly opened sensationally at 2000gns, and in a few seconds she was knocked down to the bid of Mr J. C, Fletcher, who made the purchase for the Alton I Lodge Stud. Sagati. dam of this filly, was bred bv and raced successfully for the Aga Khan. She has left three winners—all her produce to have raced so far — in England, and her half-sister, Black Star, was sold as a yearling in the ( United States for 29.000 dollars. Sagati is by Turkhan from See, a daughter of Solario, and dam of four winners. 1 The top-price today, and for this year’s sale, was 3500gns. paid by the Rand wick trainer, Frank Dalton, for a colt from the Alton Lodge Stud I draft. This was a richly-bred, medium- j sized, whole brown colt by Gold Nib 1 from High Glory. 1 A good race mare in New Zealand, and a daughter of English-bred < parents, High Glory is by His Highness from Toil’s Kiddie, the dam of a Faux Tirage colt in this draft. 1 which was bought for 1800gns by Sir Ernest Davis. High Glory won five I races and £3400 in stakes in New Zealand. She did best as a sprinter, 1 but was a minor place-getter in good 1 class middle-distance races. Mr T. C. Lowry’s Okawa Stud < topped the stud averages today. Five from this stud brought 6515gns. giv- J ing an average of 1303gns. j Mr Ken Austin did next best in the averages with a small draft from < Inglewood Stud. Kaiapoi. Four from this stud changed hands at 3890gns. 1 an average of 972Jgns. Heading this j draft was a smart Lucky Bag colt, a half-brother to the well-performed, < A. but New Zealand- . owned Prince Cortauld. With a bid of 1500gns, the. Riccarton <trainer. J. S. Shaw, secured this colt for Mr M. J. Moodabe. who own* Prince Cort- • aui' 1 Active Buyers The youthful Strong brothers were the most active Australian buyers to- ; day. Two of the principals in a Brisbane firm of bloodstock dealers, they bought 12 vearlings today, and 23 altogether. for the outlay of 8970gns. They went to four figures for only one of their purchases this year Mr C. E. Robertson, who was mainly ' instrumental in establishing the sales 1 =nd has been bloodstock manager and head auctioneer for Wright. Stephenson and Company. Ltd., sold yearlings tor the last time today. A tribute to his services was paid after the selling today by Mr Ken Austin, who thanked him for the good he had done for the New Zealand bloodstock industry. CONDITION OF TRACK AT TRENTHAM

AUSTRALIAN TRAINER’S CRITICISM

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 20. “The course proper was beautiful this time last year when it had a wonderful sole of grass. Today it is like an up-coun-try track,” said one Australian trainer here for the yearling sales when describing conditions at Trentham this morning. Other trainers have expressed dissatisfaction with the hard state of the course, parched after the long spell of fine weather. Some expressed surprise that the course proper had not been watered, as an up-to-date sprinkling system is installed. Several trainers said that Monday’s fields may be even srqaller than those in some of Saturday’s events. Already many horses have been affected by the hard going. No comment was available today from the Wellington Racing Club. The last heavy rainfall in Wellington was on December 20, when 1.72 inches fell. Wellington’s prolonged dry spell is officially described by the Weather Office as a “partial drought.”
