PLUNKET SHIELD WINNERS
CIVIC RECEPTION IN WELLINGTON
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 20. The first civic reception ever given a representative local cricket team was tendered in the Wellington Town Hall council chamber this afternoon to Uie Wellington team which won the Plunket Shield.
I The team's captain, John Reid, is still i m the South Island, and the vice-captain, |R. A. Vance, represented him. The council chamber was well filled for the reception, and the Plunket Shield, which arrived by air today, stood on the floor. The Mayor (Mr R. L. Macalister) presided. Other speakers were the president of the Wellington Cricket Association (Mr E. D. Blundell) and Mr Vance.
WIGRAM BEATEN BY SHELLY BAY

Sheily Bay won the right to play Whenuapai in the final of the Air Force knock-out cricket competition next month w jt beat Wigram in a one-day match atKilbirnie. Wellington, yesterday. ■nie Shelly Bay opening batsman, R. Dudley, scored a chanceless 176. Scores:— Shelly Bay 338 (R. Dudley 176, J. Karaurai two for 42); Wigram 165 (P. D. Haache 36 not out; D. Roberts, five for 35).
GAMES IN MALVERN COMPETITION
WINS FOR TWO LEADING TEAMS Both Sheffield and South Malvern, the leading teams, had wins in the most recent round of the Malvern Cricket Sub-associ-ation's competition. South Malvern and Darfield had a very even game, Darfield just failing to head South Malvern's total by 8 runs. D. Gunn bowled very well for Darfield and took seven for 33. Sheffield had an easy win over United. R. Skurr and O. Clark bowled well for Sheffield, while G. T. Wright batted weU tn both innings for United. Hororata showed improved form to beat Greendale. Scores were:— South Malvern 129 (R. Stuart 21, J. Marsh 31, B. Smith 26, G. Wilson 26; D. Gunn seven for 33, J. Gunn two for 31) beat Darfield 121 (J. Gunn 30, D. Gunn 43; R. Stuart five for 44, J. Marsh three for 21, R. Smith two for 16) by 8 runs on the first innings. Hororata 154 (D. Oliver 18, N. Rothwell 27, M. McCone 24, L. Clucas 15, M. Phillips 26; M. Forrester four for 19, S. Kay three for 54, F. Clucas two for 21) beat Greendale 117 (B. Ridgen 18, A. Black 27 not out, F. Adams 23; D. Oliver three for 24, N. Rothwell three for 31, M. McCone two for 9) by 37 runs on the first -innings. Sheffield 170 for six wickets declared (N. Wright 37, O. Clark 23, R. Skurr 52, D. Jenkins 37; L. Walsh two for 49, G. Edge two for 8) beat United 94 (G. T. Wright 32, P. O'Brien 20, B. Jenkins two for 39, O. Clark six for 28) and 66 (G. T. Wright 44, R. Skurr six for 23, B. Jenkins four for 1) by an innings and 10 runs.
COMPTON MAY NOT COME TO N.Z.
(NJS. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, January 20. Denis Compton has asked the M.C.C. if he can fly to Durban at the end of this Australian tour. He wants to rejoin his wife and child in South Africa. Mrs Compton was Miss Valerie Platt, daughter of a sugar plantation owner at Isipmgo in Zululand. One of the other four M.C.C. men not New Zealand v 11 probably be the Welshman, Jim McConnon. He injured himself in Tasmania and is unlikely to play again on this tour.
