FATAL ELECTRIC SHOCK
N.Z. AIRCRAFTSMAN’S DEATH IN FIJI
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 20. A Palmerston North man serving with the Royal New Zealand Air Force in Fiji suffered a fatal electric shock yesterday when he was on duty at the radio transmitter of the R.N.Z.A.F. station at Lauthala Bay. He was: Aircraftman George William Alfred Paltridge, son of Mrs E. Paltridge, of 17 Andrew Young street, Palmerston North. Aircraftman Paltridge did not recover consciousness after suffering the shock, and died early this morning.
RAIL AY SHUNTER KILLED
FALL BELOW WAGGONS (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 20. A railway traffic assistant was killed instantly in a shunting accident at the outward goods section in the Auckland Railway Station yards at 4.50 p.m. today. He was
Jack Owsley, aged 35, married with three children, of Parnell, Auckland.
The accident occurred when a rake of 37 trucks was being shunted up to two loaded petrol waggons and a refrigerated waggon standing beyond a slight curve in the track.
Mr Owsley was uncoupling the refrigerated waggon when the rake of trucks hit the stationary tankers. He was carried under one tanker. His body was extricated from under the front bogie of the second tanker.
CHILD DROWNED IN LAKE
(New Zealand Press Association) ROTORUA, January 20. A child who was on holiday with her parents near Lake Rotoiti was drowned in the lake on Tuesday afternoon. She was: Elizabeth Passmore, aged four, of Ridings road, Auckland. It is believed that the girl fell from a launch in Patons Bay while her parents’ backs were turned. MOTOR-CYCLIST KILLED
COLLISION WITH TRUCK
(New Zealand Press Association) ROTORUA, January 20. Charles Clifton Liewell, aged 45, married, with five children, a farmer at Ngongotaha, died at the Rotorua Hospital early this morning from injuries received in a motor-cycle accident. He was admitted to hospital about 8 o’clock last evening with serious injuries to his head and face received after his machine came into collision with a truck driven by Ronald Wells, of Auckland, on Dalbeth road, Ngongotaha.
WATERSIDE WORKER INJURED
When carpenters entered a hold of the overseas ship Trevanion at Lyttelton yesterday afternoon, they found a waterside worker, Robert Leader, 6f 44 St. John street, Woolston, lying injured in the bottom of the hold. Apparently Mr Leader had fallen down the hatchway just before the hatches were put on when work ceased earlier in the afternoon. He was attended by Dr. J. R. Gilmour and taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital in a St. John ambulance.
Mr Leader’s condition last evening was reported to be satisfactory.
