SNAKE FOUND IN WHEAT CARGO

TIMARU WATERSIDERS’

DISCOVERY (New Zealand Press Association) TIMARU, November 19. A gang of waterside workers unloading bulk wheat from the Kurutai ■on Thursday evening found under a tarpaulin on the deck a brown Australian snake about 2ft 4in in length. It was killed with a blow on its head. The snake, which was handed over to Mr D. M. A. Richardson, plant quarantine officer of the Department of Agriculture, this morning, is pale brown and tapers from about lin in width at its head to a thin whip-like tail. “It is the first snake of this length that the Department of Agriculture has handled in New Zealand, and it will be sent to the department’s museum for identification/’ said Mr Richardson. Until this was done, they would not know whether the snake was venomous, he said, but in the meantime, they were treating it with great care. Although the snake was killed early on Thursday evening its nerves were still twitching this morning.
