80TH ANNIVERSARY

CELEBRATED The eightieth anniversary of the Kimberley School, one of the oldest in the Malvern district, was celebrated on Saturday. After the register had been signed by former pupils and teachers, the bell was rung by Mr William Stott, the oldest former pupll'present. Mr Stott is 89 and has lived in the district all his life, three generations of his family having passed through the school. Other first-decade pupils present were Mrs S. Logie. Miss S. McCausland, and Messrs D. MacMillan, C. Stuart, J. Meikle, H. Meikle, and D. Finlay.. Sprays were presented to the two oldest former girl pupils present by Marcia Buck, the youngest presentday girl pupil, and buttonholes were presented to the five oldest former boy pupils by the youngest boy now at the school, Alan Beaman. The afternoon was spent in the school grounds, where the visitors met old friends and had photographs taken. Or* 3 interesting group was 20 members e* the Reveley family, all former pt of the school, some of whom travailed from other parts of Canterbury to the celebrations. In the evening a banquet was held in the Kimberley Hall. This was attended by about 170 former pupils, teachers, and friends. Mr J. R. Manson, chairman of the jubilee committee, welcomed guests from Auckland to Oamaru. Among the former pupils from whom apologies for absence were received was Mr Luke Hayward, the only surviving first-day pupil. Mrs G. S. Warren conveyed greetings from the Malvern County Council. She also spoke on behalf of the Canterbury Education Board.

Miss S. McCausland, the oldest former girl pupil present, cut a cake made by Mrs G. Shipley, also a former pupil, and iced by Mr Lutchford, of Christchurch. The cake was decorated with a model of the present school in icing. Mrs Shipley also made and iced a cake for the children’s table, decorating it with ,E? candles. A very successful ball concluded the celebrations. '
