Refused Entry Without
Ticket
(Rec. 11 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 5. A gatekeeper refused to admit Denis Compton to the Melbourne Cricket Ground today because he did not have a ticket , The incident occurred when Compton and George Duckworth approached the members’ gate shortly before the beginning of the match between the M.C.C. and an Australlhn The gatekeeper, Mr Charles Bonmck, asked for their tickets. ’ They said they had left them at home. “You can't come in here unless'you have a ticket,” Mr Bonnick said. Compton replied: “All right: I won’t play. I’ll go home.” Then he turned and vaulted the turnstile Into the grounds. Mr Bonnick called out: “Hey, you can’t do that” Compton, disappearing, replied: "Can’t I? Pll make my apologies to the secretary." Duckworth stood outside the turnstile until the Australian player. Bill Johnson, came on the scene and got a ticket for him.
Mr Bonnick said later: “Certainly I knew it was Compton. That doesn’t carry any weight with me. Even the Governor must have a ticket Compton won't get away with that again if Pm around." Compton said: “It was nothing at all really. I just left my ticket in the pub. I had to get in, as we hadn’t long to go before the match started. If any explanation is wanted, I’ll make it.”
