OBITUARY
MR H. B. B. JOHNSON “The Press” Special Sendee AUCKLAND, November 5. Mr Howard Ben Bishop Johnson, an Auckland businessman and veteran member of the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, died this week at the age of 74. He was chairman of directors of Cook and Company, .Ltd., wine and spirit merchants. Mr Johnson was born and educated in Lyttelton. He was a commercial traveller for Brown Barrett, Ltd., before taking over the business of Cooke and Company, which was owned by his brother, the late Mr W. Johnson. MR A. J. BARKER “The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, November 5. Mr Alfred James Parker, one of New Zealand's leading public analysts and scientific chemists, has died aged 82. Before retiring four years ago he spent 38 years in Government ana private practice in the Dominion. Shortly after Mr Parker’s death a letter from the British Analytical Society gave official recognition of his services in the form of a life membership. Mr Parker was the oldest public analyst in New Zealand.
Graduating at the age of 25, Mr Parker engaged in research in England, the Continent and America before arriving in New Zealand 42 years ago. After a period of Government service he practised privately in Auckland.
A foundation member and an exchairman of the New Zealand Chemical Society, Mr Parker was also a Fellow the British Chemical Society, a group with which he was associated for 50 years. Much of his work was connected with shipping and he was commended for his work with United States Navy ships stationed in Auckland during the Second World War.
