SMALLER SALMON IN LAKE COLERIDGE
INTRODUCTION OF NEW STOCE SUGGESTED “We are getting, I think, a type of pigmy salmon in Lake Coleridge,” said Mr R. B. Soanes at a meeting of the council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society last evening. The salmpn in this lake were smaller each year, Mr Soanes said. He suggested that the stock should be improved by the introduction of new salmon. He did not think the numbers of salmon in the lake Were falling off, but it seemed that their progeny were gradually getting smaller. He quoted figures to support this contention.
He had been shocked to see the level of the lajee so far below normal, said Mr Soanes. In one place, he had been fishing 13 feet below where he had fished last year. Considerable scouring was taking place at the lower end of Lake Lyndon, said the chairman (Mr W. J. Mac Gibbon). He suggested planting to stop the erosion, which *wal endangering the existence of the lake. Neither the landowners nor the Catchment Board would be concerned by the loss of the lake, but the society was interested because the lake was one of the main ones containing rainbow trout.
It was decided that the lake should be inspected when netting and tagging are carried out by the society at the lake later this month.
