HOUSING GROWTH
HALF-YEARLY REVIEW BY MINISTER 15 PER CENT. INCREASE SHOWN (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 4. The present year’s total of new houses might he between 18,000 and 19.000, said the Minister of Housing (Mr W. Sullivan) today in a halfyearly review of house-building. Census and Statistics Department figures on-completion of houses in 58 urban districts up to September 30 showed a 15 per cent, increase on the figures for the same period last year, said the Minister. In terms of houses, this was equivalent to an increase of 2500 houses in the yearly total for the whole country. Building permits, he said, were 29 per cent, higher than for the first six months last year. “With this knowledge I think we can confidently expect the year’s total of houses to be between 18,000 and 19,000," said Mr Sullivan. The increased rate of building was also reflected in the issue of permits and in the financing of new homes, he said. The 29 per cent, increase in building permits was a particularly encouraging sign. State Advances Corporation loans from March to September were 25 per cent, greater than in the previous year, said the Minister.
