CHILD SAFETY WEEK
PROPOSAL TO PLUNKET SOCIETY (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. November 4. The holding of a child safety week was suggested at the Plunket Society’s annual conference today. The suggestion was made during discussion of a remit urging that the society should sponsor a campaign emphasising the dangers, both moral and physical, to children left unattended in flats and houses. Mrs F. H. Grear, of Nelson, said her branch had been concerned that in two months eight children had died as a result of burns suffered while they were alone in their homes. As a result of discussions with a Magistrate, the branch considered the remit was the best way of bringing the danger before parents.
The branch had also considered the possibility of asking for the introduction of legislation to discipline parents leaving children unattended in flats and houses, said Mrs Grear. It had been felt, however, that the policing of such legislation would be too difficult.
, The conference also passed a Marton remit calling for the banning of radiators that are not adequately protected.
